My Therapy Approach
Dr. Caroliina Ying (she/her)
Therapy with me is a collaborative process where we both are active participants in your healing and growth. You and I both have roles in the therapy process, and therapy works best when we both are engaged in the process and have a good rapport with each other. Some of my roles include helping you feel comfortable, listening to you attentively, asking important questions, sharing insights of my own, providing suggestions, and drawing upon my professional expertise and training. Some of your roles include being consistent in attending, opening up in sharing, trying to reflect on yourself and our sessions, asking questions, and applying what we’ve discussed outside of session.
Additionally, I value taking a culturally-sensitive approach to therapy. As someone who has relocated many times in my life and as a child of immigrant parents, I personally have experienced how multicultural influences have shaped who I am. This is part of why I value understanding how different aspects of culture have shaped you and are relevant to your concerns. This could include various aspects of your identity like ethnic background, gender, age, faith, among other factors.
In terms of theoretical approach, I integrate a variety of theories in my work, including cognitive-behavioral theory, interpersonal theory, emotions-focused therapy, and psychodynamic theory. Another way to say that is that I try to help people learn ways to think differently, understand how they contribute to their relational dynamics, understand how their past or childhood contribute to their current issues, and/or how to respond to emotions in a healthier way.

Why Psychology?
Dr. Caroliina Ying (she/her)
My interest in psychology was first ignited when I reading the book, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. I was fascinated by the inner thought world of the main character (Deborah), how she was helped by working with a psychologist, but also how therapy wasn't a silver bullet that "fixed everything." As I continued learning about psychology and counseling, I noticed my own love for being a listening ear for others and realized that I wanted to gain greater professional training to be able to help people more. This was solidified in college, where I began in an accelerated pre-med track with an acceptance to medical school. While shadowing physicians, taking biology courses, and participating in research... I realized that while I definitely cared about the physical basis of health, I was so much more fascinated by the emotional, mental, social, and spiritual basis of health. Because of this, I chose to change paths and pursue a Ph.D. in Psychology instead and pursue a career as a psychologist. Now, what I love most about my job is having deeper conversations with people about who they are and their life, being a safe space for my clients, and seeing my clients learn and grow.
