- 01We provide several kinds of services, including: • Individual counseling • Consultation • Coaching • Presentations/Speaking • Supervision Read more about our services here:
- 02In general, NO, we do not tell anyone else what you share with us. Confidentiality is one of the most important aspects of psychotherapy/counseling. It is also a legal and ethical obligation for any professionally licensed mental health practitioner (e.g. social worker, counselor, psychologist) to not disclose anything that you tell them in therapy. However, there are some limits to confidentiality. There are some situations where a mental health professional is legally and ethically required to breach confidentiality. These situations include: 1. Suspected or known abuse of a minor, elderly person, or person with a disability 2. Imminent threat of serious bodily harm to yourself 3. Imminent threat of serious bodily harm to others 4. Another mental health professional sexually exploiting a client 5. A court mandate for a release of records Additionally, if you are paying for services using insurance, our practice must share certain information with your insurance company to submit a claim and receive payment. These claims may include information like diagnosis, symptoms, and time of visits. If you have any further questions about confidentiality and its limits, we welcome you to ask because we want to make sure you fully understand this before sharing anything potentially sensitive with us. Your counselor or any potential counselor you are considering should be happy to discuss this very important matter and provide clarification as possible.
- 03If you would like us to share information with someone else (such as a medical doctor) or for us to acquire information from someone else (such as a family member), you can provide us written permission to do so by signing a Release of Information form. Signing this form gives me legal permission to release information you have shared with me to whoever you designate on the form. If you would like to complete this form, you can find it on my website, fill it out and sign it, and then email it to me. Otherwise, I can neither confirm nor deny that you are a client of mine to anyone else, nor may I share any information you have shared with me. Please also see the limits of confidentiality that I have explained above.
- 04In general, my commitment is to protect the confidentiality of what you share with me even in the context of these other services. However, these other services are not often given as many legal reporting exemptions as psychotherapy is given, meaning there may be more times where I would be required to report situations of concern (e.g. sexual assault, illegal substance use) or comply with other requests for information (e.g. court mandate for release of records). Additionally, all of the limits of confidentiality for individual counseling (see above) are STILL valid limits in these other services. So in a nutshell, we uphold confidentiality as much as we can in these other services but sometimes these services are subject to more legal requirements to report, and we must comply with those requirements.
- 05There are a few steps: 1. Read over my informed consent document and sign. If you have any questions about anything in it, please feel free to email me before signing. 2. Verify your insurance and patient responsibility by setting up a Headway account. To set up this account, please email me your LEGAL first & last name, your preferred name, a good phone number for the account, and an email for the account. I will then send you an invitation email for a Headway account. 3. Complete this intake form to gather some brief background info. Here is the link: 4. Email me when you’ve completed these steps so we can decide on an initial meeting time (usually a 50 minute appt)! Feel free to suggest some times during weekdays 8-5 PM that could work for you, and I will also let you know what could work for my schedule.
